Integrated Action Plan to Reduce Vehicle Emissions in Viet Nam
Asian Development Bank | March 2002
Abstract
Pollution from mobile emission sources is a growing environmental problem in Viet Nam. These emissions tend to be concentrated in cities where vehicle quantity and use are highest, and have resulted in deteriorating air quality. Air pollution is also concentrated along traffic thoroughfares and adjacent locales where people live and work, and is particularly high in areas with high motorcycle numbers and traffic, a situation typical of the region. Air pollution has serious negative impacts on community health. It contributes to respiratory illnesses including asthma, affects the development of the nervous system, and can cause cancer. The least mobile populations -- the poor, the young and the elderly -- suffer particularly.
