Civil Society Briefs: Kazakhstan

Abstract
In Kazakhstan, civil society organizations (CSOs) and nongovernment organizations (NGOs) are nonprofit organizations that are often used interchangeably. There are 57,740 registered nonprofit organizations in the country and out of this figure, 37,986 are classified as CSOs which include 14,137 public associations and foundations, and 23,849 other nonprofit organizations. Since 2003, public associations increased by 85% from December 2003 to January 2013, and foundations increased almost twofold during the same period.
