The services economy is on the rise all around the world, and services now account for the largest share of economic activity and employment in almost every country. Services are becoming increasingly tradable under World Trade Organization rules and bilateral and regional free trade agreements, and some services subsectors are also seeing rates of productivity growth comparable to that in manufacturing. That's good news for competitive service providers, who want market openings and level playing-fields, whether they be in developed or developing countries.

Bhattacharya, Pritish; Hutchinson, Francis E. (ISEAS Yusof Ishak Institute, 2022-03-02)Since the oil and gas (O&G) sector’s take-off in the 1970s, this natural bounty has yielded myriad benefits to Malaysia. While not falling into the ‘resource curse’ of an unquestioned reliance on natural resources, the O&G sector is nonetheless a key enabler for many aspects of the country’s economy and public finances. Cavoli, Tony; Christian, David; Shrestha, Rashesh (Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia, 2022-02-28)SMEs are the most important source of employment in all ASEAN countries, but a lack of access to external sources of finance may limit their expansion and growth. In particular, the existence of a trade finance gap can curtail their participation in international trade. How can the Philippines seize the opportunities in services trade under RCEP?
Rivera, John Paolo R.; Jr, Tereso S. Tullao (Philippine Institute for Development Studies, 2022-02-28)Despite being a wide-ranging trading arrangement (Ho 2020; Pearson 2020; Rivas 2020; Drysdale and Armstrong 2021), RCEP is considered a marginal regional trade agreement.
