Fiji: Tropical Cyclone Winston Emergency Reconstruction Response
Asian Development Bank | September 2017
Abstract
The extremely destructive Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Winston struck Fiji in February 2016, causing the tragic loss of 44 lives. Damage to property and the consequent economic disruption were valued at about one fi fth of the country’s gross domestic product. The national power grid was devastated, with an estimated 41% of the national power grid damaged. In response to calls from the Government of Fiji, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) mobilized recovery support under the Pacific Region Infrastructure Facility (PRIF).
