Asian Development Bank and Vanuatu: Fact Sheet
Asian Development Bank | July 2006
Abstract
Updated yearly, this ADB Fact Sheet provides social and economic indicators on Vanuatu as well as concise information on ADB's operations in the country and contact information. Vanuatu has a population of 219,000, with a large percentage living in rural areas. The geographic isolation, the remoteness of its islands, and poor infrastructure, particularly in the countryside, contribute to a lack of jobcreation opportunities and poverty. Agriculture and tourism dominate the economy, employing more than 70% of the Pacific nation’s working population and representing 19% of gross domestic product (GDP). Tourism and the offshore financial banking are the major sources of export earnings.
