Asian Development Bank and Solomon Islands: Fact Sheet
Asian Development Bank | July 2006
Abstract
Updated yearly, this ADB Fact Sheet provides social and economic indicators on Solomon Islands as well as concise information on ADB's operations in the country and contact information. Solomon Islands has emerged from conflict between 1999 and 2003 as a weakly performing economy, and is one of the poorest among the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB‘s) developing member countries in the Pacific. The country is ranked the second lowest among all Pacific island nations in the United Nations Human Development Index and is unlikely to meet the majority of the internationally agreed Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. The poverty reduction challenges are greatly increased by a postconflict situation, high indebtedness, social dislocation, and fragile political and administrative institutions.
