Abstract

Updated yearly, this ADB Fact Sheet provides social and economic indicators on the Maldives as well as concise information on ADB's operations in the country and contact information. Poverty reduction in the Maldives context primarily means decreasing regional disparities in living conditions, since poverty is related to the remoteness of the islands and the lack of services in the atolls. While the country has posted impressive improvements in key social and economic indicators, poverty reduction remains at the center of the Government’s long-term vision and midterm strategies. As a result, poverty incidence decreased from 43% in 1998 to 21% in 2004.
