Country Economic Review: Sri Lanka
Asian Development Bank | February 2001
Abstract
The Sri Lankan economy started to recover in the second half of 1999, and the recoveryaccelerated in 2000. Both internal factors such as weather conditions and political uncertainties, and external factors such as overall economic fluctuation in the wake of Asian financial crisisand high oil prices were key elements in determining the movement of the economy. However, another key factor that constrained the economy was the civil conflict that started in 1983 andintensified since April 2000.
