Indonesia faces a fundamental challenge: getting teachers to be present in school. For quality teaching to exist in the classroom, teachers must first and foremost be present. The study builds on earlier work on teacher absence in Indonesia conducted in 2003 and 2008. The study also cites previousanalysis of change over time in the absence rate and the impact of selected policies and programs.

This study indicates that Indonesia has achieved significant progress over the past 10 years in reducing the absences of teachers from schools from 19 percent in a national sample of schools surveyed in 2003 to 9.8 percent in the same schools in 2014.
