Solid Waste Management in the Pacific: Palau Country Snapshot
Woodruff, Allison | June 2014
Abstract
This flyer outlines the status of solid waste management in Palau and recommends key points for action to address challenges facing the country related to solid waste management. Palau had a population of around 17,400 in 2012. Approximately 70% of the population resides in Koror, the country’s commercial and business center. Palau’s per capita gross domestic product was $13,093 in 2012 (footnote 1). The country’s economy is heavily reliant on tourism receipts, which are estimated to account for 50% of GDP. Since the pristine natural environment is one of the main reasons tourists visit Palau, eff ective management of solid wastes is critical to the country’s continued prosperity.
