Maldives: Maldives and ADB: Linking Islands
Asian Development Bank | January 2013
Abstract
Since joining the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in 1978, the Maldives has received assistance of nearly $200 million on loans, grants, and technical assistance projects. ADB helped the country toward economic recovery in the wake of the 2004 tsunami and 2008 global financial crisis by providing the Tsunami Emergency Assistance and the Economic Recovery Programs. The Maldives has made substantial progress—real per capita income had risen at an average annual growth rate of 5% and the country graduated from the United Nations’ Least Developed Country designation to Middle Income Country status on 1 January 2011.
