Attacking the Double Burden of Malnutrition in Asia and the Pacific
Gillespie, Stuart; Haddad, Lawrence | December 2001
Abstract
The concentration of malnutrition in Asia is greater than anywhere else on Earth. Seventy percent of the world's malnourished children reside in the region.
Malnutrition's causes and solutions at each stage of the human life cycle are discussed in a regional study on Nutrition Trends, Policies and Strategies and synthesized in this publication. The study aims to create a better understanding of ways to improve life span, quality of life, early cognition and life-long learning, and earning capacity of individuals and nations.
This publication covers under- and over-nutrition and micronutrient deficiencies in the Asian and Pacific region where most of the world's malnourished live
quantifies the cost of malnutrition and the cost effectiveness and rates of return on nutrition investments
defines a partnership of communities, governments, and the private sector to prevent malnutrition and promote health and productivity
analyzes management and institutional support for nutrition, including capacity needs
proposes a financing strategy for raising investment
presents a typology of ADB developing member countries to match capacity to need
